review by Robert Felts for HP Compaq Presario CQ5810 Desktop Computer – Black
Compaq CQ5814,
The main thing here is that you get Windows 7 Home Premium with the notebook system. This notebook is only marginally quicker than my ancient dual processor notebook, but it would have full a lot of distress & some cash to upgrade that ancient one to Win 7, so I bought this complete system (notebook, virtually worthless (5ppm, single function) HP inkjet printer, and a non-HD low-line HP watch for $380. I gave the printer away. I hooked them ancient & new up through a router; now I have both available on the network!
I exposed that 1) the notebook was not set up to be using both cores of the processor (I changed that) 2) the second processor core only runs at 1ghz, not 1.6ghz (according to PC Wizard) which HP conveniently does NOT tell you. But it is a 64 bit apparatus.
The notebook alone can be bought for only $279, so for that price I guess it’s a excellent value. For another $50-$75 though, you can get a lot more performance in a uncommon dual-core model.
By tweaking here and there, setting max virtual memory, and using the Win 7 ReadyBoost feature, I did get the alacrity up some.
