review by Birk Binnard for LG Electronics 10X Blu-ray SATA Writer Drive with Software WH10LS30K – Bulk (Black)
If you have Windows-7 read this,
My systems in Win7-64. I replaced a CD reader drive with this LG unit. The swap-out was simple and the new drive worked perfectly the first time. When I installed the software that came with the CD it included an option to update the new drive’s firmware. So I selected this and proceeded.
The firmware update program attempted to install new drivers for both the LG drive and my existing DVD-R/W drive. But the driver update failed because the drivers were not signed and Win7 requires signed drivers.
With that neither of my 2 optical drives worked. I had to do a System Restore to get them back.
I subsequently found out that Win7 has a boot option that allows you to bypass the requirement for signed drivers. This is the link to the page describing the fix:
[...]
Just hit F8 when Windows is starting to get the boot option page.
By selecting the boot option I was able to successfully install all the software with no troubles. Rebooting afterwards got me back to normal Win7 with both drives working OK.
With this caveat I can recommend this drive for people wanting to make Blu-Ray disks. But it sure was a hassle finding the solution.

Excellent OEM With Software,
First, it’s an LG Commercial product, so if you look on LG consumer site it doesn’t exist, go look for real info here:

Note it’s LightScribe capable. I had no thought when I bought it. (Pleasant Surprise).
The software is Cyberlink PowerDVD 8 (on a BlueRay disk), by the side of with a number of other pieces of Cyberlink software (Advisor, LabelPrint, MediaShow 4, Power2Go, PowerBackup, PowerProducer and YouCam) With installation, the software does allow for playing BlueRay movies (tested with Quantum of Solace).
It also came with a SATA cable, 4 case screws and a MOLEX to SATA power converter cable, and an actual blue-collar. For OEM it’s a very complete package.
I’ve only had it for two days, connected to Windows 7 64 bit OS.

Best Bang for your Buck!,
This did exactly what I sought after it to do, play and burn blu-rays! Works well with 2yr ancient Dell PC. I guess when the seller says “bulk”, he means he got in bulk cause I did not receive it in first box but it came with all necessary software and SATA cable as well as mounting screws and the Drive was sealed in plastic. Certainly a excellent product.
