review by Jeff Rader “jeffofpdx” for PNY Optima 4GB (2×2 GB) DDR2 800 MHz PC2-6400 Desktop DIMM Memory Module Dual Channel Kit – MD4096KD2-800
Memory is not mix and match.,
I bought this to upgrade my notebook from 2 GB to 4. It worked as expected. I use this notebook with 64 bit Linux (primary OS) and Windows 7. No problems.
Please do research before you buy. Another users wrote a negative review of this product because he didn’t know that his motherboard was not compatible with DDR2 RAM. This is not PNY’s flaw. The wits this is called “PNY Optima MD4096KD2-800 4GB 2x2GB Dual Direct Kit DDR2 800 MHz CL 5-5-5-15 PC2-6400 Desktop DIMM Memory Module” rather than simply “4GB (2x2GB) notebook memory” is because only certain types of RAM will work with your motherboard. The vital things to look at are the size, number of pins, MHz, and DDR. If you built your notebook then this probably won’t be a problem, but if a name built it for you, or you are tiresome to build one now, take a look at the blue-collar that came with your motherboard or the website of the manufacturer. They will tell you which type of RAM (DDR2, DDR3, etc), how many MHz, how many pins, and how much RAM your motherboard is capable of handling (mine is now maxed out at 4GB). If you bought an HP or Dell and are looking to increase RAM, visit their websites, look at your blue-collar, or just type the name of the notebook + memory upgrade into Google (model – “Dell Dimension 3000 Memory Upgrade”).
Another thing to consider when you upgrade is your power give. If you place in your new RAM and the notebook no longer starts (maybe the fan spins but nothing shows up on your screen), don’t assume new RAM ruined your notebook. You need a better power give. More RAM wants more power. When I upgraded I had to swap out my 350 watt power give for a 400 watt. I’m about to add a video card and blue ray player so I ordered a 550 watt PSU by the side of with them. For a decent inexpensive power give, I like Diablotek.

Poor RMA from PNY,
Be warned. If you need to do an RMA with PNY for this memory you will not recieve the same memory back. I bought 8 of these memory kits and 2 failed just with 30 days. Tiresome to get PNY to issue an RMA was a major hassel. When they sent me the replacements they DID NOT come with the heat spreaders. When I called to complain they said they do not send the heat spreader models any more even though thats what I bought. With working my way up their supervisor chain I finally got a name who said they would send me the replacements with heat spreader. I sent in their RMA memory 30 days ago and still no returned memory. When I check their RMA Status webpage, it says “Peacefulness being processed”. I will definately by no means buy any product from PNY ever again and will actively suggest to friends, family, and any one I help build a notebook to by no means buy from them again.
